Hunting Areas In Adjoining Halifax County
The first residents
of this region were Native American tribes such
as Nottoways, Meherrins and Chowanokes.
Northampton County was formed out of Bertie
County in 1741. It was named in honor of James
Compton, the 5th Earl of Northampton. Part of
the lands that originally made up eastern
Northampton County were later used to create the
neighboring Hertford County in 1759.

just 20 miles of Conway. The closest
is a mere seven miles outside of
town in the community of Lasker.
This is where you'll discover Valley
Pine Country Club, an 18-hole course
with 2 lakes, a canal, plush
fairways and excellent greens.
Head a bit south from Conway to find
Tillery Game Land, a public hunting
area in adjoining Halifax County.
You can find deer, turkey, raccoon,
rabbit, squirrel and more among the
available species. Roanoke River
Wetlands and National Wildlife
Refuge is just slightly further
south. Those with permits can take
aim at deer, turkey, raccoon,
waterfowl and a lot more on this
35,457-acre property.
It's a short drive to Roanoke
Rapids, which is situated on Lake
Gaston. Formed in 1963, this lake
has been a popular vacation retreat
for almost half a century. Boating
and fishing opportunities abound
here.
In less than 90 minutes, you can
reach the expansive resort region of
Albemarle Sound. This desirable
destination offers access to the
Atlantic Ocean in addition to lots
of golfing and fine dining.
